Valentines Greatest Movies

Valentines day is just around the corner, and what better way to set the mood than with romantic movies.
Silver Screen 77 is going to list some of our favorites, and hope that we can get the fires going. I am only listing films which can be purchased on Blu-ray... sorry I am a snob and these films should be watched in the highest quality possible. Guys what better way to get your significant other to enjoy Blu's just as much as we do?

The Time Travelers Wife is a fantasy about a man who suffers a disorder that has him jumping from present, to past, and even future. Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana star in this film about timeless love, and sacrifice. Critics hated this film, but what do they know. Something about McAdams just screams romance.

An Affair to Remember  is a beloved classic you will find on many lists. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr find romance on a cruise ship. Cary Grants character wishes to get finances in order, and to break off a current engagement. The goal is to  meet Kerr on the top of the Empire State Building in six months to solidify their love for one another. Tragedy strikes and forces Kerr to miss her date. Filled with wonderful settings and filmed in glorious Cinema Scope. An Affair to Remember is a Valentines Day Classic.

P.S. I Love You  is a very different romantic movie. Hilary Swank starts off the movie quickly become a widow when her husband Gerard Butler dies. Butler leaves 10 messages of adventure intended to help her move on with her life. It's heart breaking, but at the same time very refreshing in a romantic dramedy. P. S. I love you will leave you wanting more.

Looking for something different and new this Valentines Day?
Look no further than Moonrise Kingdom. A star studded cast of Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, and Bill Murray. Two 12 year olds fall in love and make a secret pact, and run away together in the wilderness. A storm brewing, and headed for the island just off the coast of New England looks to halt search attempts for the star crossed lovers.
Great acting, and wonderful honesty. Reminiscent of The Wonder Years, and when love is at it's purest forms. Moonrise Kingdom is a lot of fun.

The Quiet Man is directed by John Ford and stars John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen. John Wayne and Irish born American boxer travels to Ireland to reclaim his family's farm. He meet the fiery Maureen O'Hara (whom I love in Disney's Parent Trap) and falls in love. There is a lot more to this bar setting first romantic dramedy filmed in the vast and beautiful Irish countryside. If you haven't seen it, you need too. Valentines is a perfect time, and it's arrival to Blu-ray this month is perfect timing. Read the 5 star review here on this fresh blu-ray classic. The Quiet Man Blu-ray Review

This is a great film for both.

Jane Austen's classic brought beautifully to life by Keira Knightly. Women, if you can get your mate to watch this with you... he really does truly love you.

A kiss is still a kiss. You have to add Casablanca to any Valentines day film list. Casablanca is film cinema perfection, and Valentines romance gold.

Ok, maybe I have a bit of a crush on Rachel McAdams. I was never a big Channing Tatum fan until this film. An accident and amnesia forces two people to find love again. I really enjoyed this film, and I'm a guy. :)

The You've Got Mail Blu-ray also includes The Shop Around the Corner DVD. 2 Valentines day movies for the price of one. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan do such a great job together. Even though this is a remake, it adds a lot of fun humor, and chemistry between it's two stars who have shared the screen twice before.

Out of Africa is an Epic Romance. I chose to place this on the list instead of Titanic because few have seen this 1985 Best Picture film.
A true story carefully mastered by the late great Sydney Pollack who also won Best Director. Love and Loss fills this embodiment of unparalleled cinema greatness. Out of Africa is a Valentines Must, and has some of the best cinematography to ever grace the silver screen.

Enchanted is just fun romance. Even the songs are fun. Amy Adams carries this movie alongside Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Susan Sarandon. A cartoon fairytale turns to real life in this live action Disney classic.

A great Valentines gift is this movie which I predict will win Best Picture this year. February 12th, 2013 sees this fantastic romantic dramedy drop on Blu-ray and DVD. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Julia Stiles, and Chris Tucker headline this kooky film. Cooper, A former high school teacher recently out of a mental hospital seeks to win back his ex wife. He winds up in an unlikely romance with a neighbor who also has mental issues. Everyone in this cast shines. A must V-Day film.

I got sucked into this film one day when my wife was watching it. Nicolas Sparks adaptations are pretty good I must say.
I like this film more than Pretty Woman, and I had to have a Richard Gere film on my list. Diane Lane and Gere are brought together by a storm in the town of Rodanthe, North Carolina. I won't give anymore details away, but this is a really good movie.

There is simply no better movie than this for Valentines romance. The first time I saw this... I wept like a child after his first spanking. Hahaha, no seriously though, I really did. Yes!!! I love Rachel McAdams, she earned 3 spots on this list. We will call her Miss Valentine... and Ryan Gosling you are an idiot for not holding on to her. Hopefully you have seen this movie, if not the perfect time is now.
